When is WordPress the right choice — and when is it not?

We build on WordPress, and we also build the things people replace it with — so we have no reason to oversell it. WordPress is excellent when content is the product: marketing sites, editorial platforms, and anything where non-technical people need to publish quickly without a developer in the loop. It is the wrong tool when the real job is transactions, inventory or complex business logic, and bending it into that shape is where projects get expensive.

What you are buildingWordPress fitOur honest take
Marketing or editorial siteExcellentHard to beat for publishing velocity and editor comfort.
Content-heavy site needing a fast frontendGood — go headlessKeep WordPress for authoring, put Next.js in front of it.
Serious or high-volume commerceWorkable, but strainedWooCommerce scales with effort; a headless stack often fits better.
Inventory, accounting or operationsWrong toolThis is ERP territory — plugins will not hold it together.

Classic WordPress or headless?

Go classic when your team lives in the WordPress admin, relies on the plugin ecosystem, and page-load speed is good enough. Go headless — WordPress as the CMS, Next.js or React as the frontend — when performance and frontend control genuinely matter, or when the same content must feed a site, an app and a partner channel at once. Headless costs more to build and needs developers to maintain, so it should be a deliberate decision, not a default.

If the honest answer turns out to be "not WordPress", we will say so. For commerce that has outgrown plugins, look at Medusa headless commerce or our guide to open-source Shopify alternatives. For inventory, billing and operations, that is ERPNext. Not sure which? Tell us what you are trying to build.
