Tally to Zoho Books Migration: What Moves, What Stays (2026)

Tally to Zoho Books migration step by step: what moves, what stays in Tally, Zoho's own route, the cut-over, GST continuity, and when not to move.

Published 27 Oct 202610 min readBy Manoj

A Tally to Zoho Books migration carries your chart of accounts, customers and suppliers, items, opening balances and open invoices and bills into Zoho Books on a fixed cut-over date. Closed years and old vouchers stay in Tally, read-only. Zoho's own route is a guided export and import rather than a one-click converter, so the work is cleaning, mapping and tying the numbers out.

Quick answer

Export masters, the trial balance, the stock summary and outstanding bills from TallyPrime as on the day before your cut-over date. Set up the Zoho Books organisation with the same GSTIN, import the chart of accounts, contacts and items, enter opening balances on the migration date, then import open invoices and bills. Tie the trial balance and GST ledgers out against Tally, set up e-invoicing and e-way bills in Zoho Books, and run one month in parallel before Tally becomes the archive.

I am Manoj. I lead ERPNext and Frappe programmes at MithTech, a team of Frappe specialists in Bengaluru, and we support Zoho and do new Zoho Books setups as well as ERPNext and Tally. That means I will tell you when Zoho Books is the wrong move, which it sometimes is.

When does Tally to Zoho Books make sense?

When your problem is access and automation, not scope. The move fits a business whose books are the system: trading or services, one or a few GSTINs, people working from more than one place, and an owner who wants to approve and look things up from a phone. Zoho Books is cloud software on a subscription, with e-invoicing on its paid plans and e-way bills built in (Zoho Books pricing, read 27 October 2026).

It is the wrong move in three cases.

Stay on Tally

Your accounting happens in one office, your CA works in Tally, your connection is unreliable, or you rely on TDL customisations nobody wants to rebuild. TallyPrime now files GSTR-1 and generates e-invoices from inside the software, so compliance alone is not a reason to leave.

Go to ERPNext instead

You are leaving Tally because stock, production, orders and the books live in different places. Zoho Books keeps them apart too, with deeper inventory only on its top plans or in Zoho Inventory. ERPNext puts them in one system with no per-user licence fee.

Move to Zoho Books

You want cloud books, built-in automation and mobile approval, your operations are light, and you already use other Zoho apps or plan to.

If the first two cards sound closer, read Zoho Books vs Tally or see what moves on Tally to ERPNext before you commit.

What moves to Zoho Books, and what stays in Tally?

Bringing every voucher since the company was created slows the new books, and nobody looks for a five-year-old receipt in Zoho Books.

Move to Zoho Books:

  1. Chart of accounts (ledgers and groups, mapped to Zoho's account types)
  2. Customers and vendors, with GSTIN, GST treatment, PAN and addresses
  3. Items, with HSN or SAC codes, units and tax rates
  4. Opening balances as on the cut-over date
  5. Open (unpaid) sales invoices and purchase bills as on the cut-over date
  6. Opening stock, if you track inventory in Zoho Books

Keep in Tally, read-only:

  • Closed financial years and their reports
  • Paid invoices and bills before the cut-over date
  • Past receipts, payments, contras and journal vouchers
  • Old stock movements and batch history

Zoho's guide can import past transactions too (sales, purchases, projects and manual journals), in a set order (Migrate from Tally to Zoho Books, read 27 October 2026). That is useful for the current year's open items. For closed years it adds noise, and your CA can still open them in Tally.

Does Zoho have its own Tally migration route?

Zoho publishes a Tally to Zoho Books guide for India. Read on 27 October 2026, it is not an automatic converter: you export four things from Tally (the stock summary, master data, voucher data and the trial balance) and bring them in through Zoho Books' normal import screens, one module at a time (Migrate from Tally to Zoho Books). Taxes are added by hand under Settings, not imported. Opening balances go in on a migration date that matches the date of your Tally trial balance, and the Opening Balance Adjustments account must end at zero. Transactions dated on or before the migration date have to be synced from the Opening Balances screen.

Zoho Books imports CSV, TSV and XLS files (Migrate to Zoho Books from other systems, read 27 October 2026). TallyPrime exports reports to Excel, XML and, since Release 7.0, JSON (TallyPrime 7.0 release notes, read 27 October 2026). So the route is Tally to Excel, clean, then Excel into Zoho's templates.

Zoho's US site advertises free migration help and lists Tally in its form (Zoho Books migration, US, read 27 October 2026). The India guide does not mention that offer, so ask Zoho India what they will do for your data before you plan around it.

How do you migrate, step by step?

Step 1: Fix the cut-over date. A year end is cleanest, because last year's closing balances become the opening balances. If you cannot wait, use a month end. A mid-month cut-over splits one GST return across two systems.

Step 2: Export from TallyPrime. Open each report, press Alt+E (Export) and choose Excel. The checklist lists what you need. Menu names shift a little between releases; if a path differs, find the report and export from it.

Step 3: Map. Map each Tally ledger to a Zoho Books account type (asset, liability, equity, income, expense, bank, accounts receivable, accounts payable). Tally often keeps a separate GST ledger for each rate or registration; Zoho Books works from tax rates you set up, so decide which rate each old ledger becomes. Clean duplicate party and item names now: Tally allows names that differ only by spaces or capitals.

Step 4: Set up the organisation and import. Create the organisation with your 15-digit GSTIN and GST settings, then import in Zoho's order: chart of accounts, settings and modules, customers and vendors, items, bank accounts, opening balances, then open transactions (Migrate from Tally to Zoho Books, read 27 October 2026). If you have branches with their own GSTINs, set them up before importing, because Zoho needs a GSTIN on file to turn branches on and wants a separate invoice series per GSTIN (Zoho Books: branches, read 27 October 2026).

Step 5: Tie out. Before any live entry:

  1. Trial balance: Zoho Books' trial balance on the migration date matches Tally's, line by line.
  2. Debtors and creditors: receivables and payables ageing match Tally's outstandings, invoice by invoice.
  3. GST ledgers: input CGST, SGST and IGST match Tally's credit balance; output tax matches the liability.
  4. Bank: each bank balance matches the statement on the cut-over date.
  5. Stock: the opening stock value matches the stock-in-hand figure in the trial balance.
  6. Opening Balance Adjustments: zero.

Step 6: Set up e-invoicing and e-way bills in Zoho Books. E-invoicing needs GST configured first. In Zoho Books, enable it under Settings; on the Invoice Registration Portal, create an API user through a GSP and pick Zoho Corporation; then use Connect Now in Zoho Books with that username and password (Zoho Books: set up e-invoicing, read 27 October 2026). If you already generate e-way bills through Zoho Books, the same login works for the IRP. E-way bills follow the same pattern: enable them under Taxes & Compliance, register Zoho Corporation as your GSP on the e-way bill portal, and connect with that login (Zoho Books: generate e-way bills, read 27 October 2026). Raise one test invoice of each type you issue, and give e-invoice rights only to the roles that need them.

Step 7: Run one month in parallel. Post the first month in Zoho Books and keep Tally open as a check, not as a second set of live books. File that month's returns from Zoho Books. If the month closes clean and the trial balances still agree, Tally becomes the archive.

GST continuity: same GSTIN, earlier returns stay as filed

Changing accounting software does not change your GST registration. You enter the same GSTIN in Zoho Books, and the returns you filed from Tally stay on the GST portal under that GSTIN. You do not refile them.

If you find a mistake in an earlier period after the move, you fix it the way you would have in Tally: through the amendment tables of a later GSTR-1, within the time limit in the law. The GST portal's FAQ says corrections to a previous financial year are not allowed after 30 November of the following year (GST portal FAQ: Form GSTR-1, read 27 October 2026). A late correction to a Tally-era invoice goes into a current period's GSTR-1, whichever software prepares it.

Keep the Tally books readable. Section 36 of the CGST Act has every registered person retain books and records until 72 months after the due date of the annual return for that year, and longer if an appeal or investigation is open (CGST Act, section 36, read 27 October 2026). For a business moving off Tally, that means the old company file and a way to open it, for years.

Frequently asked questions

+

Does Zoho Books have an automatic Tally import tool?

Not one we could find. Zoho's India guide for Tally, read on 27 October 2026, is a manual export and import through Zoho Books' standard import screens, with taxes set up by hand. Zoho support answers migration questions by email. If anyone offers you a converter, test it on a copy of the data before trusting the numbers.

+

Can I bring all my Tally history into Zoho Books?

You can import past transactions, but you rarely should. Bring masters, opening balances and open invoices and bills. Leave closed years in Tally, where your CA can still open them, and keep the Tally data for at least as long as GST law asks you to keep records.

+

Will my GSTIN or past GST returns change?

No. The GSTIN is your registration, not your software's, so you enter the same one in Zoho Books. Returns already filed stay on the GST portal. A correction to an earlier period goes through a later GSTR-1, within the time limit.

+

How long does a Tally to Zoho Books migration take?

It depends on how many companies and GSTINs you have, how many years you carry, and how clean the masters are. Most of the time goes into cleaning and mapping, then a test import. Plan the cut-over at a month end and allow one month in parallel after it.

+

Should I move to Zoho Books or ERPNext?

Zoho Books if your books are the whole job and you want cloud access and automation with little setup. ERPNext if you are leaving Tally because stock, production and sales sit outside the books; it puts them in one system with no per-user licence fee. If you are not sure, start with the comparison or Tally to ERPNext.
