Short answer
ERPNext is an open-source ERP (enterprise resource planning) system built on the Frappe Framework. It puts accounting, stock, manufacturing, buying, selling, CRM and projects into one web application, with no licence fee per user or per module. ERPNext is GPL-3.0; the Frappe Framework under it is MIT. Version 16 reached its final release on 12 January 2026. In India, GST runs through the India Compliance app and HR and payroll through Frappe HR, both installed alongside ERPNext. It fits businesses that need more than accounting; a business that only keeps books is usually better served by Tally or Zoho Books.
What does ERPNext actually do?
ERPNext manages the core operations of a business in one connected application. Finance, sales, purchasing, stock, manufacturing and projects work from the same data instead of passing spreadsheets and WhatsApp messages between teams.
The value is in the links between modules. A sales order can reserve stock; a reorder level can raise a material request when stock runs low; a delivery and an invoice post to the stock ledger and the books as they are submitted. Nobody re-enters the same sale in three places, and month-end has less to reconcile.
ERPNext is open source: the code is public on GitHub, and any business can install and modify it without paying a licence fee. That is the main difference from proprietary ERPs such as SAP Business One, where you pay for the software itself, usually per user, before implementation starts.
Which modules does ERPNext include?
ERPNext ships its modules in one installation with no per-module fee. Some functions that used to sit inside ERPNext now live in separate Frappe apps that install on the same site.
What comes with ERPNext v16
ERPNext itself covers Accounting, Stock, Manufacturing, Buying, Selling, CRM, Projects, Assets, Quality, Support (issues and service levels) and Point of Sale. HR and payroll moved to the separate Frappe HR app in v14, loans to the Lending app, and GST for India is in the India Compliance app. All of them are open source and install on the same Frappe site.

Beyond these, the Frappe ecosystem adds standalone apps such as Frappe Insights (dashboards), Frappe CRM (a newer sales CRM) and Frappe Helpdesk (ticketing and a customer portal), each installable alongside ERPNext.
Is ERPNext really free?
The software is free. Running it is not. This distinction trips up most first-time buyers.
What you actually pay
ERPNext is free to download and use under GPL-3.0: no per-user fee, no per-module fee and no licence renewal. You pay for hosting, implementation (one-time) and, if you want it, yearly support. Implementation is usually the largest line, and it grows with the modules you switch on, how much you customise, how much history you migrate and how many systems you connect. SAP Business One and Odoo Enterprise add a per-user licence on top of all of that, every year.

Who is ERPNext built for?
ERPNext fits a recognisable profile of business. Knowing whether you match it saves months of evaluation.
The typical ERPNext business
ERPNext fits a business that has outgrown accounting-only software and needs stock, manufacturing, projects or HR tied to its books: a manufacturer, distributor, trader or services company that wants to own its data and its workflows. The fit is decided by what you need the system to do, not by headcount or turnover. It fits less well when only the books need a system, or when your customers or parent company require you to run on a specific ERP.
ERPNext is a strong fit when:
- You run manufacturing, distribution, retail or professional services
- You need more than accounting: stock, production planning, HR or CRM alongside your books
- You want to own your data and change workflows without paying per user
- You operate in India, where India Compliance covers GST, e-invoicing and e-way bills; for other countries, check the regional app for yours
ERPNext is not the best fit when:
- Your operation is bookkeeping for one entity: Tally or Zoho Books is simpler
- Your customers or group require a specific ERP and integration with it, for example a parent company that standardises on SAP; see ERPNext vs SAP Business One
- You need a consumer-style app with no training: the v16 desk is cleaner, but ERPNext is still a business tool that needs a few days of training per role
What is the Frappe Framework and why does it matter?
ERPNext is built on the Frappe Framework, and that explains much of how ERPNext behaves.
The Frappe Framework is an open-source (MIT) full-stack web framework in Python and JavaScript. It provides the database layer, REST API, user interface, permissions, workflow engine and report builder that ERPNext runs on. Custom fields, workflows and print formats are made with Frappe's tools rather than by editing core code, so upgrades stay clean and customisations carry across versions.
Why this matters for a buyer:
- Custom fields without code. Add a field to any form (Sales Invoice, Item, Employee) from the browser.
- Workflows built in. Approval chains, state changes, email alerts and assignments are configured, not coded.
- An API for every document. Every DocType has a REST endpoint, so payment gateways, shipping providers and your other tools connect through a documented interface.
- Companion apps. Frappe CRM, Frappe Insights, Frappe HR and Frappe Helpdesk share the framework and install on the same server with shared users.
What changed in ERPNext version 16 (2026)?
ERPNext v16 reached its final release on 12 January 2026, after a beta from November 2025. Frappe counts 50+ new features from 600+ contributors.
The main v16 changes
Frappe says v16 is up to 2x faster. It brings a new desk, Chrome-based PDF printing, an MRP workflow that combines forecasts and delivery schedules, Financial Report Templates for customisable P&L and Balance Sheet layouts, inward subcontracting for goods made from customer-supplied material, and a Serial and Batch Traceability report. It also needs newer runtimes: Python 3.14 and Node 24.

How does ERPNext compare to the alternatives?
Once you know what ERPNext is, the next question is how it compares. The short version:
ERPNext vs the field
ERPNext competes with three groups. Accounting tools such as Tally and Zoho Books are simpler and cheaper to start, and cover the books. Mid-market ERPs such as SAP Business One and Odoo Enterprise go deep in places but are licensed per user every year. And the alternative nobody lists: spreadsheets plus disconnected tools, which is what many Indian SMEs are really replacing when they choose ERPNext.

How do you actually implement ERPNext?
Implementation is where ERPNext projects succeed or fail. The software is free; the implementation is the investment.
An implementation runs in six phases. How long each takes depends on your modules, how clean your data is and how much time your team can give. The most common failure is skipping the parallel run: going live without checking that opening balances, stock counts and workflows match the old system.
- Discovery: map your current workflows, pain points and must-haves
- Configuration: set up the chart of accounts, item groups, warehouses, roles and workflows
- Data migration: import masters (customers, suppliers, items) and opening balances
- Training: train users on your own data, not demo data
- Parallel run: run old and new systems side by side until the numbers match
- Go-live: switch over, with support close at hand in the first weeks

Can ERPNext handle Indian GST and compliance?
GST is the deciding question for most buyers in India. ERPNext handles it through the India Compliance app, maintained by Resilient Tech. GST moved out of ERPNext's core in v14, so the app is part of every Indian setup.
With India Compliance, ERPNext supports e-invoicing (required once aggregate turnover crosses ₹5 crore in any year from 2017-18), e-way bills, GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B preparation, GSTR-2B reconciliation, GSTIN validation and multiple GSTINs in one company. TDS and TCS are handled in ERPNext's accounts. The app is free; its e-invoice and e-way bill API calls use paid credits.

Does ERPNext have AI features?
Yes, through add-on apps rather than a built-in engine. We could not confirm an AI engine in ERPNext's core as of v16.
The routes are open-source apps and a model you choose: Raven's AI agents create records and read receipts, Frappe Assistant Core connects ERPNext to Claude or ChatGPT over the Model Context Protocol, community apps answer plain-English questions about your data, and n8n adds AI steps to automations. The apps carry no licence fee; the model behind them usually costs per use.

What is the learning curve for ERPNext?
Moderate. How quickly a team settles in depends on how close the new process is to the old one and whether training uses your own data.
Accountants who know Tally adapt fastest: the accounting logic is familiar, the screens are new. Store and production users take longer because ERPNext enforces a sequence (receipt before issue, work order before finished goods) that informal processes skipped. Administrators have the most to learn: DocTypes, permissions and workflows are the deepest layer.

How do I decide if ERPNext is right for my business?
Answer five questions.
- Do you need more than accounting (stock, manufacturing, HR or CRM)? If not, choose Tally or Zoho Books.
- Will several people work in the system at once, across departments? If one person keeps the books, spreadsheets or an accounting tool may be enough.
- Do you value owning your data and paying no per-user fee over the most polished interface? If polish matters more, look at Zoho or Odoo.
- Can your team give the project time for discovery, data cleaning, training and a parallel run? If you must be live in days, ERPNext is not the answer.
- Is the cost of today's workarounds (re-entry, reconciliation, stock errors) larger than the cost of an implementation? Estimate your price to compare.
If you answered yes to all five, ERPNext is likely a good fit. If you answered no to question 1, choose Tally. If you answered no to question 4, start with an accounting tool and move when you have the time.
