ERPNext and Odoo are the two open-source ERPs most Indian small businesses shortlist. Both put accounting, inventory, HR, CRM and manufacturing in one system. They differ on the licence model, on what the free edition holds, on how GST is handled and on how you customise them. ERPNext has no licence fee, so its cost depends on modules, data migration and custom work; estimate your price to see what that comes to for you.
Short answer
For most small businesses in India, ERPNext is the better fit. It is open source under GPL-3.0 with no edition split and no fee per user, so cost does not grow with headcount, and every module ships in the one codebase. Odoo Community is free and covers more than many think, manufacturing included, but the full Accounting app, payroll, quality and GST return reports sit in Odoo Enterprise, which is billed per user per month. Odoo fits better when its CRM, eCommerce or a specific Odoo app is what you need most.

What is in Odoo Community below was checked against the Odoo 18.0 source on GitHub (odoo/odoo, 2026-10-12): a module counts as Community only if it is in that repository.
Accounting and finance
ERPNext ships a complete accounting module in its one edition: multi-currency, bank reconciliation, budgets, cost centres, TDS and TCS through tax withholding categories, and financial statements. GST e-invoicing, e-way bills and GST reports come from the India Compliance app (built by Resilient Tech; GST moved out of ERPNext's core in version 14).
Odoo Community includes invoicing, payments and analytic accounting. The full Accounting app, with the bank reconciliation screen and financial reports such as the balance sheet and P&L, is Enterprise (the account_accountant and account_reports modules are not in Community).

Inventory and supply chain
Both handle stock, warehouses and purchasing. ERPNext includes batch and serial tracking, quality inspection, multi-warehouse stock and material planning in every installation.
Odoo Community's inventory is strong: warehouses, routes for inter-warehouse transfers and dropshipping are all in Community. The barcode app (stock_barcode) is Enterprise.
About even: both handle standard inventory well. ERPNext includes everything; Odoo has the larger app catalogue.
Human resources and payroll
ERPNext's HR and payroll come from the Frappe HR app (open source): employee lifecycle, attendance, leave, shifts, expense claims, and payroll with salary structures you set up for PF, ESI and professional tax.
Odoo Community covers employees, leave, attendance, recruitment and fleet. Payroll (hr_payroll) is Enterprise.

CRM and sales
ERPNext's CRM covers leads, opportunities, quotations and sales orders in one workflow that flows into accounting and stock without connectors. Frappe CRM is a separate, more modern CRM app on the same framework.
Odoo CRM is in Community and is one of Odoo's strongest apps: pipelines, activity scheduling and email integration. Marketing automation is Enterprise; email marketing is in Community.
Odoo ahead for CRM-led businesses: its CRM interface is more polished. ERPNext suits businesses that need CRM joined to stock and accounts.
Manufacturing
ERPNext covers bills of materials, production planning, work orders, job cards, subcontracting and quality inspection, with GST on each invoice through India Compliance.
Odoo's manufacturing app (mrp) is in Community, with BOMs, work centres, work orders and subcontracting; maintenance is in Community too. Product lifecycle management (mrp_plm), quality control and the shop-floor tablet app (mrp_workorder) are Enterprise.
ERPNext ahead on cost: quality and the shop floor are included. Odoo Community manufacturing is a real option for simpler plants.

The licence model is where they differ most.
What you pay for with ERPNext
- Licence: none. Open source, no fee per user.
- Hosting: your own cloud server or on-premises machine, or managed hosting on Frappe Cloud. Server size, backups and redundancy set the bill.
- Implementation: depends on modules, how much data moves and how much custom work you need, priced stage by stage.
- Customisation: Python on the Frappe framework, by your own team or an implementer.
- Support: optional, from your team or an implementer.

- One App Free: one app with unlimited users, on Odoo Online.

Implementation depends on scope for both. The gap that does not depend on scope is the licence line. ERPNext has none, so your costs do not grow with headcount.
Which handles Indian GST and compliance better?
Both rely on a localisation module, so ask what each one covers and who keeps it current.
ERPNext uses the India Compliance app, built by Resilient Tech and open source:
- CGST, SGST and IGST calculation, HSN and SAC codes
- E-invoicing with IRN through the government API, and e-way bills
- GSTR-1 preparation and purchase reconciliation against GSTR-2A/2B
- TDS and TCS through ERPNext's tax withholding
The API features (e-invoice, e-way bill) need an India Compliance account.
Odoo ships its India localisation in Community: the chart of accounts and taxes (l10n_in), e-invoicing (l10n_in_edi) and e-way bills (l10n_in_edi_ewaybill). GST return reports and filing (l10n_in_reports) are Enterprise.
For a business that files GST returns from its ERP, that last line matters: on Odoo it means Enterprise. Test your own invoice types in a trial of either before you commit.

ERPNext is built by Frappe Technologies, based in Mumbai, and India Compliance by Resilient Tech in India. Odoo is built by Odoo S.A., based in Belgium, with its India localisation maintained alongside many other countries'.

ERPNext has a wide base of Indian implementers and Frappe developers. ERPNext runs on the Frappe framework, a full-stack Python framework for business applications:

Frappe developers and ERPNext consultants are easy to find in India.
Odoo
Odoo uses Python with its own ORM and the QWeb templating engine. Customisation is powerful but has a steeper learning curve, and custom modules must follow strict conventions. Odoo Studio, its no-code builder, is not in Community.

When should you choose Odoo instead?
Odoo may be the better choice if:
- A polished CRM matters above all else. Odoo's CRM has the more refined interface.
- You rely on a specific Odoo app that has no ERPNext equivalent.
- You want a richer built-in eCommerce and website builder in the same product.
- Your business is mainly in Europe, where Odoo's localisations are deepest.
- You have budget for Enterprise and prefer Odoo's app marketplace.
